The Shrewdness previews the World Baseball Classic and debates the greatest baseball movies of all-time.
00:00:21
Welcome, welcome, welcome to another edition of the
00:00:23
Shrewdness. I'm crew joined by Chiz and Dex.
00:00:28
Chiz is a world traveller again. Dex is back.
00:00:32
He's he was a world traveller last week.
00:00:36
I may, I may be travelling next week.
00:00:37
We're just everywhere. Yeah, that's.
00:00:40
What we do, that's what we do. Hey, we're glamorous.
00:00:44
It's the glamorous life of a shrewdness host, this is.
00:00:46
What it requires you too. Whatever.
00:00:49
Could be this someday. That's right, conducting
00:00:52
interviews in probably 10 years or so.
00:00:55
Yeah. No, we're we're happy to be back
00:00:58
with you. It's been a a good ride got a
00:01:02
lot more support here lately gathering followers.
00:01:06
We're doing T-shirts. We got an updated website
00:01:09
shrewdness is is gaining some momentum.
00:01:13
Appreciate the support from all of you keep keep the comments
00:01:17
coming on social media, all those good things.
00:01:19
We got a a fun show tonight. We're going to talk about the
00:01:23
world Baseball classic. That's going to lead us through
00:01:25
some discussion on that. And spoiler alert, the US is
00:01:30
stacked. This year.
00:01:33
And then Chips has a fun baseball segment too, that we'll
00:01:36
we'll get to you after that. So Dex, let's launch right into
00:01:40
it. Tell us a little bit about the
00:01:42
World Baseball Classic. Well, it's good to be back.
00:01:45
Sorry I missed last week. And Matt Cronin, man, I really
00:01:49
wanted to be able to interview as well.
00:01:50
I had some great questions. Chips have got enough of them
00:01:53
out for me though, so it's pretty good.
00:01:55
But thanks for coming on last week for the show.
00:01:57
Really appreciate it. It was awesome getting that
00:01:59
insight. So I loved it.
00:02:02
So funny story about spring training is sometimes it's the
00:02:08
games are totally different. So we got there on Saturday and
00:02:10
we watched the it's basically the first game.
00:02:13
So is the Diamondbacks and the Rockies.
00:02:15
It was just all is stacked to the gills, packed house.
00:02:19
And here's the beautiful thing. If you've never been to spring
00:02:21
training before and you guys get to ask if we were there
00:02:24
together. But it is the happiest group of
00:02:27
people on the planet. Like Disney.
00:02:29
It's got a few things, but it has a long lines.
00:02:33
You have to do the the What's the world?
00:02:36
'S pass or something. Yeah, you have to fast pass and
00:02:39
it's a small world. You have to do that ride that
00:02:41
takes 4 years and it's the same song over and over and
00:02:43
your ears bleed by the time you get done.
00:02:45
Spring training. On the other hand though, pure
00:02:48
happiness and joy is is. All.
00:02:51
Around people are just having beers laying around enjoying the
00:02:54
sunshine it's always perfect Arizona is the perfect place for
00:02:59
spring training. Florida, not bad, but kind of
00:03:01
sucks. As you heard from Matt last
00:03:03
week, you still have to drive and commute as a player, whereas
00:03:06
in Phoenix everything's within 45 minutes.
00:03:09
So shrewdness. You've never been to spring
00:03:11
training, even if you're not a huge baseball fans.
00:03:14
We took my wife's uncle out there and her cousin, they don't
00:03:18
even like baseball. They loved it.
00:03:21
They want to go all the time now.
00:03:23
So it's it's one of those things you don't even have to like
00:03:26
baseball to love it. And it's everyone's so happy and
00:03:29
pleasant and it's just awesome. And if you have kids, they will
00:03:32
get a ball. Absolutely.
00:03:34
You have to try and go out your way to not get one.
00:03:37
Really. If you just give a little bit of
00:03:39
effort, they'll be tossing them up in the outfield in between
00:03:42
innings. The pull pens hook them up, but
00:03:44
post game, pre game, in between every inning, they throw them
00:03:47
over the dugouts. That's pretty fun.
00:03:48
Just want to highlight if you've never been to spring training,
00:03:51
it is one of my absolute favorite things.
00:03:53
Every single year we try and go at least for a a long weekend,
00:03:57
but I want to highlight that. So this year's kind of
00:04:00
highlights. So Jack Caglione, Royals second
00:04:03
year player, he threw a ball up and Zorlin got it.
00:04:06
Sounds pretty cool. He's smoking it this spring,
00:04:08
too. He's hitting.
00:04:09
Like, yeah, he's got a two of the top, what, eight all time
00:04:13
that he's hitting spring training and Jack is we'll see
00:04:17
how he does again. He's got to be able to not
00:04:19
Serrano his way through the lineup.
00:04:21
He's be able to hit the curveballs and he's got to stay
00:04:23
consistent. But it was good seeing him and
00:04:27
the game. We already got to hit the next
00:04:28
game. He hit a dinger, so we missed
00:04:30
that one. But Blake Mitchell, we got his
00:04:32
autograph. Carter James.
00:04:34
Cool. Carter Jensen is the catcher
00:04:37
that started that game ahead of Blake who came in later.
00:04:39
They're the Royals two top prospects are both catchers and
00:04:44
Carter Jensen looks good man. And I've been seeing a lot of
00:04:46
buzz about how he could be competing for rookie of the year
00:04:50
potentially. And looking at his played
00:04:53
approach and discipline and he striped the ball.
00:04:57
I'm pretty excited too. So Royals fans out there, Carter
00:05:01
Jensen man looks pretty good and Blake Mitchell also looked
00:05:04
pretty decent, but it it kind of looked one AI don't even know if
00:05:09
it's 1B anymore. It's it's just starting catchers
00:05:11
for Carter Jensen and Salvy should be DH and it's kind of
00:05:15
what what we got there And I kind of put up a couple shorts
00:05:19
too from last week. So Jordan Lawler for.
00:05:21
Arizona, that was in center. Field and it's kind of decided
00:05:25
like record one pitch and Jordan Lawler goes yard on.
00:05:28
It that was the only one you recorded.
00:05:30
For him, yeah. I just.
00:05:32
Let's see what he can do here. Hey, shrewdness.
00:05:34
Here's Jordan Lawler. And there it goes.
00:05:38
Sounds pretty awesome. But that was fun.
00:05:40
And then Charlie Condon, we got him.
00:05:42
So he's a former Golden Spikes winner out of Georgia, and I
00:05:46
think he's third overall pick for Colorado Rockies.
00:05:48
A couple seasons ago. He hurt his wrist, though, right
00:05:51
off the bat, and it's kind of derailed his development.
00:05:54
But it was good seeing him finally get a hold of one for
00:05:57
the Rockies. So for Rockies fans out there,
00:05:59
Charlie Condon, man, I think if he gets to Coors, he was an
00:06:03
incredible hitter. He's the best player in college
00:06:05
baseball. It means something in the SEC
00:06:07
out of Georgia. So I'm hopeful for you guys.
00:06:10
And this is a baseball fan. I hope he pans out.
00:06:12
Yes, nice guy. He is big, too.
00:06:14
He's like 6 foot 4. And let's be honest, we need
00:06:18
some to cheer about it. As a Rockies fan, if if you're
00:06:21
out there, you need some, you need some to cheer, man, We
00:06:23
could definitely. Because it ain't your pitching
00:06:25
staff, right? Chase Dowlinger was all right.
00:06:29
So he's one that you guys are hoping does well for Colorado
00:06:31
fans out there. But past that, good Lord, it is
00:06:35
a skinny lineup. It is skinny pitching.
00:06:38
And The thing is, it's that owner just doesn't care about
00:06:40
you. And it's so, so sad.
00:06:42
It's so sad I to have all those resources available and then
00:06:47
never use them. Nope.
00:06:48
I got all this money. But we're never going to feel
00:06:50
the better team. We're going to let everybody go
00:06:53
cool ball. It might be a longer.
00:06:57
It's awesome. Yeah, people go anyway, which is
00:07:01
not the problem. It's cool because it's that cool
00:07:03
of a ballpark when you stare at the Rocky Mountain, on the
00:07:05
sunset, on the Margarita porch. It's.
00:07:08
Hard to beat. It's hard to beat and you almost
00:07:11
always have offense because if your team's not hitting, the
00:07:13
other team is, so someone's hitting dingers.
00:07:16
You're going to see some home runs from one team or the other.
00:07:19
A. Little preview of Spring
00:07:21
training highlights is a lot of fun, sans the trip back, so I
00:07:24
won't bore you with that. But Planes, Trains and
00:07:27
Automobiles was in full effect with us on the way home, and we
00:07:32
did not get home on time. I was supposed to be hours
00:07:35
early. Instead, I was hours and hours
00:07:37
late. Screw Frontier, I'll put that
00:07:38
out there. I don't want you to sponsor US
00:07:40
ever, Frontier. Never.
00:07:42
So there we go. All right, World Baseball
00:07:44
Classic. So I love the World Baseball
00:07:49
Classic. I loved it ever since it
00:07:50
started. So it's every three years, which
00:07:52
is kind of cool all by itself. This year just happened to be
00:07:56
paired with the Winter Olympics, World Cup, soccer, and now we
00:08:00
get the World Baseball Classic in the middle.
00:08:02
It's like. What?
00:08:03
It's world events all over the place.
00:08:05
It's like 6 months of world but I think it's.
00:08:09
Perfectly tucked between the Super Bowl and spring training.
00:08:12
Like it's just, it couldn't come at a better time, really.
00:08:15
It is now I want to ask you guys where I jump in all the kind of
00:08:18
the previews. Did you actually watch the World
00:08:21
Baseball Classic in previous years?
00:08:23
I mean, despite me urging you to.
00:08:25
Did you actually ever watch it and what do you think of it?
00:08:29
I watched, I did just a handful of games.
00:08:31
I did not watch much of it, but I've seen a, you know, a game or
00:08:35
two from the last from the 20231.
00:08:38
So you weren't watching Panama and Nicaragua play each other?
00:08:42
You weren't diving into the depths like I was?
00:08:44
No. OK, that's all right, Chisholm.
00:08:45
How about you? Yeah, I watched, but I pretty
00:08:49
much watched the US, so I would watch the US games, OK, whoever
00:08:54
they were playing. Yeah, and that's that's what
00:08:57
most people do and there's nothing wrong with that, to be
00:08:59
honest. I mean, I think World Cup, most
00:09:01
people watch US and then they'll try and watch other ones that
00:09:04
are good in this year's. I think it's kind of pretty
00:09:09
obviously the top teams are, so I'll kind of run through the
00:09:12
pools just so you guys know who's who in the zoo.
00:09:14
But in a nutshell, the favourites to win this thing are
00:09:19
Japan, the defending champs, US, Dominican Republic, Venezuela
00:09:25
and Mexico. So those are arguably the top
00:09:28
five teams that most people expect to be there at the end.
00:09:31
But as with pool play, it'll happen.
00:09:34
There's going to be some upsets. So much like World Cup, there's
00:09:38
pools. So there's four pools here and
00:09:40
they have 5 teams each and the top two teams advance out of
00:09:44
each pool and so they all play each other.
00:09:46
So we got four games and it's the top two teams, best records
00:09:49
win and move forward. So we have Pool A, which is in
00:09:52
Puerto Rico, so that one's got Canada, Colombia, Cuba, Panama,
00:09:56
Puerto Rico. So I think that that'll become a
00:09:59
fun one. Canada actually has a chance,
00:10:01
but I think most people expect Puerto Rico and either Cuba or
00:10:05
Colombia to kind of get the two spots out of there.
00:10:08
Then in Houston for Pool B, that's where the US is.
00:10:11
So the US has Mexico, Italy, Great Britain and Brazil kind of
00:10:16
have a softie. It should be Mexico and US all
00:10:18
day out of that one. Just being honest is what it is.
00:10:21
And then Pool C, this one will be really not too challenging
00:10:25
either. So this is in Japan and we have
00:10:27
Australia, China, Taipei, Chech, Chechnya, if you remember for
00:10:35
other days. So check yeah, Japan and Korea.
00:10:38
So we're. Back with that.
00:10:39
Check. No check.
00:10:40
Yeah, was what it. Was for the check check.
00:10:42
Check, check, check, check. Check.
00:10:44
So it's going to be Japan and one other one, probably Korea.
00:10:48
So those are kind of the two favorites there.
00:10:50
And then Pool D is in Miami and this one has the Dr., which is
00:10:55
going to be the one seat out of that one, Israel, Netherlands,
00:10:58
Nicaragua and Venezuela. Most people expect Venezuela to
00:11:02
be the second team out of that pool.
00:11:04
So that's kind of a quick wave over of where they are.
00:11:08
And it all starts on Friday. So it'll be kind of fun going
00:11:12
through. And again, like I said, Japan
00:11:16
and US, that was who faced off in the championship last time.
00:11:18
And if you remember, it is one of the most epic.
00:11:21
I can't believe it happened in real world and TV.
00:11:23
It's what you would have scripted is Shohei Otani
00:11:26
pitching the bikes out with the game on the line in a one run
00:11:30
game. You know, Otani strikes him out.
00:11:34
That was, it was just an exciting, exciting game and it
00:11:38
boom, it just catapulted Japan and Shohei Otani.
00:11:42
Since then, I think he's won two MVPS and the second run the
00:11:46
other. Yeah, exactly.
00:11:49
He's done pretty well since then, so that's kind of fun.
00:11:52
Hey, so I, I don't think you said it directly, Dax, but the
00:11:55
US plays Friday, Saturday off Sunday and then they play
00:11:58
Monday, Tuesday are their four pool games.
00:12:01
Yep. So they start off Friday against
00:12:03
Brazil, Saturday against Great Britain.
00:12:06
Monday is probably the the game everybody wants to watch, Monday
00:12:09
against Mexico, as we will do in soccer and everything else.
00:12:11
We just love US Mexico. And plus Paul Skeens is pitching
00:12:15
that day. Good luck.
00:12:16
Mexico. Yeah.
00:12:17
And then Italy will be on Tuesday, which, yeah, I think we
00:12:21
can bat opposite handed and win that game.
00:12:24
Not being mean. I mean, they're going to have
00:12:26
some players. And that's what's surprising
00:12:28
about these. So if you've never watched the
00:12:29
Baseball Classic, like, how is anybody going to compete with
00:12:32
these teams? And it's these.
00:12:35
They pull guys off the couch and they start hitting.
00:12:37
It's like, what the heck, man? It's awesome.
00:12:39
Yeah I saw the highlight from the the last WBC was they said
00:12:47
there's 2 highlights for Otani. 1 was the the at bat against
00:12:50
Trout to win the whole thing. The second one was Otani
00:12:53
striking out against a 5 foot 9 dude throwing 79 miles an hour.
00:12:59
It was so. Awesome.
00:13:00
So to your point, it's like if, if you don't have Paul Skeens on
00:13:04
your team, you're finding some dude from back of nowhere
00:13:08
Netherlands. That's that's like, hey, I
00:13:10
pitched in high school or something and.
00:13:12
It really is. And then you find people that
00:13:15
like, my grandpa was from Canada, so now we're on team
00:13:19
like Freddie Freeman. Yeah, he's about as US as you
00:13:22
can get plays for Team Canada. And so there's there's stuff
00:13:26
like that and like, oh, all right, I got you.
00:13:30
But it's it's still cool and I love it.
00:13:33
I'm just so excited about it. But here's what I'm super
00:13:36
excited about. Tell me when you find a hole in
00:13:39
this lineup that the US put out today against San Francisco.
00:13:43
So we LED off with Bobby Witt, Junior.
00:13:47
OK, now let's go with Bryce Harper, Aaron Judge, Kyle
00:13:52
Schwarber, Alex Bregman, Cal Rally of the what, 60 home runs
00:13:57
last year's at catcher. Yep.
00:13:59
Roman Anthony, Byron Buxton and Bryce Trang and Bryce Trang is
00:14:05
not bad in your 9 hole 'cause you left on the bench.
00:14:09
No, you left on the bench. Here's the rest of their bats
00:14:11
that don't even start. Will Smith, catcher, World
00:14:15
Series champion, multiple times. Paul Goldschmidt.
00:14:18
Yeah, he's won a couple MVPS. You've got Gunner Henderson,
00:14:22
shortstop for the Orioles, who I believe was runner up, MVP two
00:14:26
years ago, came back last year. But you have see Pete Crow,
00:14:30
Armstrong, Gold Glove center fielder on the bench.
00:14:33
He. Was close to like was he 3030
00:14:37
last year or something? I think so.
00:14:40
Chaos this Tim Sheridan pointed out his nickname last year,
00:14:43
which totally came to fruition last year.
00:14:45
Watching him play. Unbelievable.
00:14:47
He's a menace on the base pass. For sure.
00:14:49
And so in in if you can actually get that line up out, if you can
00:14:52
accidentally get it out, here's this a main starters Paul
00:14:56
Skeets, back-to-back Sia Terek Scubal, back-to-back Siaux,
00:15:02
Logan Webb, Michael Walker, Clayton Kershaw, that that old
00:15:05
random guy who's won a zillion he.
00:15:09
Retired from baseball, but he decided to play in this.
00:15:13
Yeah, Matthew Boyd, yes, he's a pretty crafty lefty.
00:15:16
He's pretty darn good. Your bullpen, let's just go with
00:15:19
Mason Miller. He's not going to be throw
00:15:21
anything under 100. That's nice on Griffin Jacks.
00:15:24
Oh, yeah, you too. You don't throw much under 100.
00:15:27
David Bednar, the Yankees closer, welcome.
00:15:30
He's had Four Seasons out of five.
00:15:32
Incredible. And then Clay Holmes.
00:15:35
So there's other ones on there as well, but that's kind of the
00:15:37
the highlight ones. How do you beat that team Jason?
00:15:41
Does anyone have a chance to do much against this team?
00:15:46
At least until the the semi finals and finals?
00:15:49
No, I mean in short, no, I I don't see any possible path.
00:15:57
You would have to have so many things go wrong that
00:16:03
statistically are improbable. And I think, you know, it's just
00:16:09
not going to happen. So even if you even if one of
00:16:12
your pitchers is off, a starter's off, well, you've got
00:16:15
a billion guys in the bullpen that are just as good and
00:16:19
they're not all going to be off. And if, if you've got two or
00:16:22
three guys online that are having an off day, yeah.
00:16:25
Yeah, bring in, bring in Gunner Henderson to pinch it.
00:16:29
Yeah, it's like, but here's the only thing that worries me a
00:16:32
little bit. If it feels like we're a little
00:16:35
bit like the Russian hockey team and I, and that's the only thing
00:16:40
that worries me is like, we're so stacked that everyone's like,
00:16:44
there's no chance. And it like usually that's what
00:16:46
some weird crap happens, right? Yeah.
00:16:49
It's it's hard to do it for 9 innings though.
00:16:52
Like I understand a hockey game is 60 minutes to tracking all,
00:16:55
don't come at me hockey fans, but at the end of the day, the
00:17:00
sheer amount of talent differential until the end,
00:17:03
Again, once these kind of top teams rise up into the semies,
00:17:09
anything can happen there and I understand that.
00:17:11
But it's still going to take something weird to knock this
00:17:13
team off. It'll be yeah it should be a
00:17:16
dominating pool. Play 2 games at least.
00:17:20
So Peru, when you hear that line up in that pitching staff, who
00:17:23
stands out among the stars that you're like, wow, that's going
00:17:28
to be fun to watch this player play.
00:17:31
Oh, Paul Skeens is is crazy good.
00:17:35
He's I'm I'm sure, I'm very sure they picked him against Mexico
00:17:40
before they even started thinking about who else is, you
00:17:43
know, starting for them in Pool play and then Tarek school and
00:17:48
Logan Webb. I mean, you could easily start 3
00:17:51
and O winning each game one to nothing or something crazy,
00:17:55
except you have an incredible lineup.
00:17:57
So it'll be more like 8 nothing or something but.
00:17:59
Yeah, I mean, today they started off 15 one versus San Francisco.
00:18:03
Yeah, they came out hot. And here's here's an interesting
00:18:06
thing. So Michael Phelps got to sit in
00:18:08
the dugout today with his kids and he gave a a speech to Team
00:18:12
USA before they it was the first exhibition game today.
00:18:15
So they all got to put on the USA stripes for the first time.
00:18:18
And the quote that kind of came out of it is second place is not
00:18:22
going to get it done. And from 23 gold medal winner
00:18:28
Michael Phelps. Yeah, that's, that's pretty
00:18:31
cool. Apparently they all were very
00:18:32
inspired afterwards. Thought it was pretty awesome.
00:18:35
So I kind of like the way they're starting.
00:18:36
They're like no settling this year, boys.
00:18:39
Gauntlet has been thrown down. It's win or go home.
00:18:43
Yeah, and a quote attributed to Mark DeRosa, the US Team USA
00:18:46
coach. And he has been the last couple
00:18:47
teams. This team just feels different
00:18:50
than 23. It just does.
00:18:52
Cool. Just that don't get you excited.
00:18:54
A little goosebumps 'cause that team was a pitch away.
00:18:57
I mean, that was a good team, right?
00:19:00
I want to go through another one.
00:19:01
So imagine your outfield if you're the Dominican Republic
00:19:04
and you're looking at that line. I'm saying hold my beer.
00:19:07
Team USA, we're marching up Julio Rodriguez, Juan Soto,
00:19:13
Tatis Junior, and our backup is O'Neill Cruz.
00:19:16
That's our outfield. How are you doing?
00:19:18
Yeah, Like, wow. All right.
00:19:21
That is pretty good. That's.
00:19:22
Ridiculous. And like, but who do you have on
00:19:24
the infield? Dominican Republic.
00:19:26
Oh, I'm sorry. We got Vlad Guerrero, Manny
00:19:29
Machado, Kettle Marte and Junior Caminero.
00:19:32
Like, OK, fine, fine. Who's your backup?
00:19:37
Oh, we got Perdomo. You know, the starting shortstop
00:19:38
for Arizona. Awesome guy, plays 2-3 hole
00:19:42
there. We can also win some Gold
00:19:43
Gloves. Like, fine.
00:19:45
So you can see where the Dr. is a worthy competitor.
00:19:49
Yeah, just the pitching is it looks like always the Dr. does,
00:19:53
right? It's a bunch of dudes you don't
00:19:54
know, but they've been in the majors.
00:19:56
They're just kind of nondescript guys.
00:19:58
Yeah, They just don't have like the schemes and Scubal.
00:20:00
That's right. But they're solid.
00:20:03
They have all these really good dudes, and they're all crafty,
00:20:06
man. They all remind me of the guy on
00:20:07
The Sandlot. He's just throwing junk, right?
00:20:11
So they seem like those guys, that whole team of them, their
00:20:13
pitching staff is long and deep. That's going to be a tough out.
00:20:17
So Dr. When they're going to get through the pool, like I said,
00:20:20
Pool D, it's going to be. DR4 and O versus whoever in the
00:20:25
semi. I feel like it's similar to what
00:20:29
Matt talked about last week just in the the College World Series,
00:20:34
like the first round or so, you're like separating the men
00:20:37
from the boys. Yeah.
00:20:39
And then you go into those, you know, win or go home situations.
00:20:42
And it's like, all right, now this is a totally different
00:20:45
level of competition. And so I it almost feels like
00:20:48
the pool play is almost like an exhibition.
00:20:51
The teams that are supposed to win probably are going to
00:20:54
easily. And then the real fun starts
00:20:57
when you get into the like next Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday
00:21:00
type time frame that second round.
00:21:02
Yeah, bracket, I think that's true.
00:21:05
So I'm excited, but it's going to be fun.
00:21:07
And then for us, I think another team we're going to like as
00:21:10
Royals fans is Venezuela. So Venezuela's got a couple
00:21:14
Royals on there with with Salvi, Salvador Perez.
00:21:16
We got Michael Garcia. He's on there and their out
00:21:20
feels nothing to sneeze at. So they got Ronald Acuna junior
00:21:25
Cheerio from the Brewers and then Abreu will what's the name?
00:21:30
I'm just like what it is. It's.
00:21:31
Wilmer, I think, right? Or I think so.
00:21:33
That sounds right, Wilmer. So that's a ridiculously good
00:21:36
outfield too. But that's that's their so Cunha
00:21:39
Cheerio and Abreu is Venezuela's outfield and they got salad
00:21:42
behind the plate. They got Contreras brothers
00:21:45
first base and backup catcher or DH.
00:21:47
They got three time batting champ Louis Arise and then
00:21:50
Michael Garcia Gold Glove at third base so that that team can
00:21:54
compete too. Yeah.
00:21:55
So that's why they're up there. And then Japan, we just it
00:21:59
starts to name a show. Hey, but here's the thing with
00:22:01
Japan. And This is why I think US has
00:22:03
the advantage this year. I mean, they're still going to
00:22:06
have Yamamoto but and Tonic pitchers, but Shohei is not
00:22:10
pitching this year. So Atani will not be pitching
00:22:13
for Team Japan this year. I didn't know that until earlier
00:22:15
today. I was like, oh, I don't know
00:22:17
that. I guess the Dodgers are not
00:22:19
going to let him do that in this particular format.
00:22:23
So he's just going to hit. But I don't know, sometimes
00:22:25
having your 5050 guy, it's still pretty good, Yeah.
00:22:28
Right. I think they'll they'll still.
00:22:30
Find ways to contribute, I assure you.
00:22:32
That's all I can get, OK. Right, right.
00:22:36
Well, you know, don't forget to it for Royals fans out there,
00:22:42
Italy, Italy is another one. So you got you got Vinny right,
00:22:48
who may be my favorite personality on the Royals these
00:22:51
days. You got Jack Caglione and
00:22:56
although he's not with the team anymore, recent ex Royal Michael
00:23:00
Lorenzen. It's.
00:23:02
Pitching for him. So there's a there's a few, few
00:23:05
Royals connections on that Italy team.
00:23:07
Now I don't expect that Italy team to contend by by any means
00:23:12
because if you look at the rest of that team.
00:23:13
That's the problem. Well, there's there's some
00:23:16
holes, there's some holes, but you know, it'll be fun to watch
00:23:20
those guys get some at bats. It is like I said they it's they
00:23:24
usually do better than you think.
00:23:25
I always think it's like it should be just 27 outs in a row
00:23:29
and 27 KS. When you see some of these line
00:23:31
UPS, you're like, huh, they're actually putting the bat on the
00:23:33
ball to a 98 mile an hour slider.
00:23:36
How in the heck do they do that? I thought they weren't even in
00:23:38
the majors. They're not.
00:23:39
They're in the developmental league.
00:23:41
OK, so some of these guys are just athletes.
00:23:43
You know, it's fun to watch what they can do.
00:23:45
It's kind of inspiring like, huh, maybe I can still get out
00:23:47
there. Like no, you're not going to
00:23:49
throw a ball over them. The mountains.
00:23:51
You can. You can.
00:23:52
Exactly. So that's not going to.
00:23:55
Happen. The other thing that's kind of
00:23:56
fun to look at is if you like to go deep, and I do, you look at
00:24:01
the coaches. We're just going to let that one
00:24:04
go. Teams look at the look at the
00:24:09
coaches for some of these teams and like, you know, I, I had
00:24:14
just pulled up Italy. One of the assistant hitting
00:24:16
coaches is Jorge Pasado. They have a, a, a, a, a, a
00:24:21
bullpen coach. Sal Fasano.
00:24:23
I don't know if you remember him from what else days.
00:24:26
Sal Fasano, Dave Righetti is a pitching coach.
00:24:30
So they, they have like, you know, a lot of guys who stars,
00:24:34
who are greats back in the day and now they're, they're on
00:24:37
these World Baseball Classic Staffs, which is kind of cool
00:24:40
too. It's awesome.
00:24:42
I did AI did a quick Google search decks and I found out
00:24:45
that there are 9 Dodgers playing in the World Baseball Classic.
00:24:50
There are 14. There are 14 Royals playing.
00:24:53
There we go, Royals. Royals, by the way, we've been.
00:24:59
Crap out of Cuba today. Yeah, Kansas City is better than
00:25:03
Cuba. Yeah, there it is, The whole.
00:25:05
Country. Yep, the enough you guys know
00:25:07
the whole. Country.
00:25:08
And that's without Pasquatch. Caglione.
00:25:12
That's right. Michael Garcia.
00:25:15
So that's pretty good. We got to punch Cuba with all of
00:25:18
our best players gone. That's right.
00:25:21
That's kind of fun. That's right.
00:25:23
Shut them out. Awesome.
00:25:25
So that'll be fun. So that's what you need to look
00:25:27
forward to. Shrewdness.
00:25:28
TuneIn man, I promise you won't be upset watching these games.
00:25:31
They're so fun. Here's the biggest difference.
00:25:33
If you've only watched US baseball and you've been to
00:25:36
games, it's kind of, it can start off like a library
00:25:38
sometimes. I get it.
00:25:39
I've been to those games. Then as the alcohol starts
00:25:42
flowing into the 5th, 6th, 7th innings and it gets more
00:25:45
exciting, right? I mean, now the game's starting
00:25:46
to become in doubt. You have some key moments.
00:25:49
It gets exciting. Pitch one game, one batter, one
00:25:53
of these games, all of them, especially the the Latin
00:25:58
American countries, It is a party.
00:26:00
You'll have bells, drums, little noisemakers.
00:26:04
It's going to sound like soccer. It just does.
00:26:06
It's like a soccer game. It's a early environment.
00:26:09
It's fun to watch. They can't drown it out enough.
00:26:12
You just sit there like this is great.
00:26:14
The players show absolute emotion like they are 12 years
00:26:19
old again. They they are jumping out of the
00:26:22
dugouts, they're giving high fives, they're a hug and they're
00:26:24
running all over the place. It's different for them too.
00:26:27
So you can see it even on US players, which are normally
00:26:30
reserved. This is what it is.
00:26:32
I mean, they've gotten a little more, I would say they've gotten
00:26:34
a little more feisty over the years, but still, you will see
00:26:38
their actual emotions come through all the time.
00:26:41
It's going to be really fun to watch.
00:26:42
So if you've never done it, I implore you to watch.
00:26:44
I think you're really going to like it and you might just
00:26:46
become as big a fan of the World Baseball Classic as me.
00:26:48
We'll see. There's something different when
00:26:50
you're playing for your country and it is it's unique.
00:26:54
And in baseball you don't really have that.
00:26:57
So this is the the first opportunity to kind of had that
00:27:00
and you see that, that pride and and you know that that's fun to
00:27:05
watch. That's a lot of fun to watch.
00:27:07
I think you made a good point earlier, just when all these
00:27:09
guys that used to play baseball are excited enough about this to
00:27:12
come back into it, even as a coach or something, right?
00:27:15
And it's like, this is this is cool.
00:27:18
I'm going to go participate in the only way I can at this point
00:27:22
in my career. That's right.
00:27:24
Only, like Matt said, like Matt said last week, it's a great way
00:27:27
to grow the game. You know, it's like, yeah,
00:27:29
absolutely. You know, a lot, a lot of people
00:27:32
who normally wouldn't, wouldn't TuneIn are probably going to
00:27:35
tune in. They may not be Major League
00:27:37
Baseball fans, but they're like, hey, Great Britain's playing
00:27:39
this week in the Baseball Classic.
00:27:42
I want to tune in and see what that's about.
00:27:44
You know, yeah. And that's one reason some of
00:27:47
these really good players go to the other countries, like
00:27:49
Freddie Freeman to Canada. I mean, yeah, he would be
00:27:53
starting first base for Team USA, but he's also getting all
00:27:57
those young Canadian kids excited.
00:27:59
Like their team actually has a bonafide star, like a future
00:28:03
Hall of Famer, World Series winner, multi time MVP.
00:28:08
That means something. These kids actually have
00:28:09
something to look up to and they can buy a Canada jersey with
00:28:12
Freddie Freeman's name on the back and feel pretty good about
00:28:14
it. And so I think there's something
00:28:16
to be said about that and it's it's just kind of cool.
00:28:19
And like for Great Britain, because they have some of those
00:28:22
islands, they they have good shortstops.
00:28:24
Jazz Chisholm. Yeah.
00:28:26
Great Britain. Yeah.
00:28:27
But it's just because, you know, curious, I think is one of the
00:28:30
islands. But it's just, or maybe that's
00:28:32
the Netherlands. That's the Netherlands has that.
00:28:34
I remember they had just like ridiculous shortstops.
00:28:36
It's a jazz. Chisholm is Bahamas.
00:28:38
Bahamas, and that's the. Yeah, yeah, OK.
00:28:41
So you get these random players and like Harry Ford, he's a
00:28:44
catcher. He was in the Mariners
00:28:45
organization. I think he just got traded this
00:28:47
offseason. So I'm failing us because I'm
00:28:48
not going to look it up, but he's with another organization.
00:28:50
But he's awesome. He's a top prospect.
00:28:52
He's Great Britain's catcher. It will actually be really,
00:28:54
really good. It'll be fun to watch.
00:28:57
I want to ask. Also inventor of the automobile
00:29:02
and the assembly line as well. So that's, that's Henry.
00:29:06
Oh, wait, no. That this is Henry.
00:29:07
Henry this. Is they're related?
00:29:10
Great, great, great grandson. My bad.
00:29:12
Exactly. You can ask.
00:29:13
You can edit that out. My bad.
00:29:15
All right, so Brew, do you think, and I'd just be remiss if
00:29:19
I didn't ask this question because the high we're on the
00:29:22
two premier sports, the Winter Olympics, I don't think I'm
00:29:24
being biased this way. It's hockey.
00:29:26
You want to win hockey. And now we have Team USA coming
00:29:29
off the women's and the men's gold medal.
00:29:32
Feeling good. We're getting ready to go in the
00:29:34
World Cup to keep the momentum going.
00:29:37
If Team US doesn't win this, is it a failure?
00:29:41
If, is it when or they've just failed the country?
00:29:46
That's a lot of pressure to put on.
00:29:47
But man, now that we've just taken out Canada twice in their
00:29:50
sport, now baseball's our sport. It's our game.
00:29:54
Like we spread it around the world, but it's America's
00:29:57
pastime. I mean, you mentioned, you
00:29:59
mentioned Dominican Republic. They're going to be a solid
00:30:01
team. Venezuela's got a decent team.
00:30:04
I mean, there's, there's going to be plenty of competition. the
00:30:07
US still has, like you said earlier, a lot of a lot of
00:30:10
talent and enough talent to win this for sure.
00:30:12
But it's not going to be, you know, just handed to them.
00:30:16
So they still have to go play. So, but I I mean, yeah.
00:30:21
I kind of. I kind of agree.
00:30:22
I think it's a let down if they don't win I.
00:30:25
Do too, and I certainly feel like that's a lot of pressure.
00:30:28
But this roster is built for one purpose, to beat the hell out of
00:30:33
other teams around the world. And it's kind of in the past,
00:30:37
it's been hard to get the best players to play for whatever
00:30:40
reason, right? Like Bryce Harper hasn't.
00:30:42
I don't think he's played on Indium before.
00:30:44
I think there's only three returns, Schwarber, Bobby Witt
00:30:48
and Goldschmidt. I think that's the only three
00:30:52
people back from the 23 team. There's no Mike Trout.
00:30:55
There's no Mookie Betts, Trey Turner.
00:30:58
Not on this team. Yeah.
00:31:00
And it's still just ridiculously stacked.
00:31:02
But then you feel like the ones they replace those guys with,
00:31:05
OK, we don't have Trey Turner now we have Bobby Witt and
00:31:08
Gunner Henderson. That's not a bad trade off.
00:31:11
Yeah, I think it's it's either the same or better.
00:31:14
I mean, it's kind of hard to go anywhere but there.
00:31:17
I mean, Bryce Harper, welcome to the party, Multiple time MVP
00:31:20
winner and he's just a stun all the way down the lineup.
00:31:25
Everybody wanted to be on this team.
00:31:27
It was like the first time ever the best players actually said I
00:31:31
would like to play, I'm waiting by the phone, please call me and
00:31:34
there's a lot of guys that didn't get the call for.
00:31:37
The first time Dex, I read a little bit about that and that
00:31:40
that is a thing that was a thing in the past is like they
00:31:43
couldn't really garner interest or whatever.
00:31:45
Yes, And the first two players they called this year were Aaron
00:31:48
Judge and Paul Skeens. Yeah, like when we.
00:31:51
Used to call up, you know, player number 3 and you're like,
00:31:54
hey, are you in? Paul Skeens and Aaron Judge are
00:31:57
already in. Yeah, it does make it easier.
00:32:00
How could you not say yes to that?
00:32:01
Right. That's what Trout and Mookie
00:32:03
Betts were doing last time. That's the two main ones they
00:32:05
had on the team last time. And they did get it better than
00:32:08
before. So it's gotten more and more of
00:32:11
America's top players are actually showing up to play.
00:32:14
And I'm just excited. This one, in my opinion, is the
00:32:18
best assembled roster we've had. Period.
00:32:20
They did say that that skeins was a key ad because in the past
00:32:24
they haven't had the pitching arms that they that they thought
00:32:27
they needed. And that's because of injury
00:32:30
risk and, you know, throwing early in the season when you've
00:32:32
just shown up to spring training and all that kind of stuff.
00:32:35
And it sounds like skeins and others are kind of, you know,
00:32:39
dispelling that myth saying we're going to be fine.
00:32:42
You know, it's we're going to show up and play for our country
00:32:45
and entry risk, you know, will have to go away.
00:32:49
So I think Mike Trout did want to play on this team and he
00:32:52
couldn't get insurance. And that's a yeah, a weird
00:32:55
thing. So I know some players just
00:32:56
couldn't flat out get it, but that's kind of a strange thing.
00:33:00
So you think it might have been some of the reason in the past
00:33:02
some of these pitchers is couldn't, especially if you're
00:33:04
getting a $40 million contract like Verlander or something
00:33:07
like, well, degree, right? I mean, there's some really good
00:33:11
pitchers that were three years ago, he'd really wouldn't have
00:33:14
them. And so I'm wondering if that was
00:33:15
just not talked about as much back in the day as it is now.
00:33:18
Yeah, but it's it's a thing. I did see that was a thing for
00:33:21
other countries too and not just the US team, but there's other
00:33:24
players that couldn't get insured to play in it for
00:33:27
whatever reason. That's the advantage of Italy,
00:33:30
that you know, they don't have to worry about the players like
00:33:33
you. Can go back to Costco or the
00:33:37
equivalent Italian Costco afterwards and it's all good.
00:33:40
So the thing that the only bummer of this particular team
00:33:43
that I saw of the news I read, and it does suck, is Tarek
00:33:46
Skubal is only going to pitch one game.
00:33:48
So he's pitching Saturday against Great Britain.
00:33:52
Not going to be a real test. Maybe never know.
00:33:56
I mean, like Harry Ford might just go 3 for three with a
00:33:58
couple grand slams. Who knows.
00:34:00
You never know. But it kind of sucks he's only
00:34:02
doing the one game. I didn't know that until earlier
00:34:04
today too when I was doing a little research on the roster.
00:34:06
Like awesome, awesome, awesome. That's it.
00:34:08
Scuba will only pitch one game against Great Britain on
00:34:11
Saturday and then he's done. I'm like, what?
00:34:13
Why come on now? But me will still get skeins.
00:34:17
Almost seems like why bother? I mean, I hate to say hate to
00:34:22
say why bother, but it almost feels like you're just like
00:34:24
checking a box to say, yeah, my jersey.
00:34:27
Yeah, I did it. I I played the World Baseball
00:34:29
Classic. But like, I mean, I get it,
00:34:31
nobody wants to get hurt and it's but.
00:34:33
They're going to let you pitch the first game.
00:34:35
What's wrong with game two and three 'cause you're not pitching
00:34:38
any more than that 'cause you have the semi finals and then
00:34:41
you have the finals? Like there's not that many
00:34:43
games. So I don't, I don't quite get
00:34:46
that, but whatever. Maybe there's just a bunch of
00:34:49
stuff unsaid in the background, or maybe there's an article I
00:34:52
just haven't read yet about that.
00:34:53
Why not save him for the? Specifics.
00:34:55
Bracket play a game or something.
00:34:57
Like that, if you're going to do it, let's throw one of our
00:34:59
randos in there 'cause you feel pretty comfortable about Logan
00:35:03
Webb and Paul Schemes and Michael Walker, Clayton Kershaw,
00:35:05
Matthew, we have a lot of Yeah, again, first time ever you kind
00:35:09
of go down the list. Like these guys are pretty good.
00:35:11
This is pretty fun. I know these names and they're
00:35:14
not the 4th and 5th starters of these Major League teams.
00:35:18
They're opening day guys, so that's pretty fun.
00:35:22
All right. So that's that's our baseball
00:35:24
class. I'm going to transition over to
00:35:26
Chisholm here is going to go into our next segment.
00:35:29
So here you go to introduce it. So we're going to have a little
00:35:33
fun tonight, you know, kind of been a little bit of a lull, get
00:35:35
right ahead to March Madness, World Cup, baseball, all that,
00:35:38
but a little bit of the lull. So this one, we like to do a
00:35:41
little bit of fun, have a little fun with the segment.
00:35:44
And as we are heading into baseball season, I thought it'd
00:35:47
be a good time to talk about the best baseball movies of all
00:35:51
time. So we've got a fun little
00:35:52
activity I'm going to do. I'm going to throw they don't
00:35:54
know this yet to Dex and Prue. I've got a list of 12 films.
00:36:01
I call them films because that's more artistic than movies.
00:36:05
So this is I've got a list of 12 films.
00:36:08
Here's what here's what we're going to do.
00:36:10
Features, Cinematic features. 12 cinematic features I'm going to
00:36:15
list these random in random order and you guys blindly are
00:36:21
going to rank your top five meaning when I list it you're
00:36:25
going to have to say it's not in my top five or you're going to
00:36:29
have to list it as five through 1 and you don't know what's
00:36:33
coming next Oh no so this is going to be quite a fun little
00:36:39
activity so you know kind of have in your head maybe ones
00:36:43
that you might like ones that you're going to like I'm going.
00:36:47
To write some down to wait, screw me.
00:36:50
Yeah. So I'm going to throw this is
00:36:52
this is I'm going to throw 12. You have, you have 6 responses.
00:36:57
You can have it's not on my top five or one through 5.
00:37:02
Yeah, gotcha. All right.
00:37:05
I already have a list. Here we go, these are the 12 in
00:37:07
my in my unbiased pin opinion. OK, the. 12 Best baseball movies
00:37:13
of all time. OK.
00:37:17
All right, let's start with this one.
00:37:18
This to you, Dex? The rookie.
00:37:21
The Rookie. That's a great movie, but not in
00:37:24
my top five. I like it a lot, though not.
00:37:26
In my top five fruit. Not top five.
00:37:29
Net doesn't make either top five.
00:37:31
OK #2 I'm going to list out here the natural top five, Redford.
00:37:40
Back top. Three.
00:37:41
Yeah, OK. What number?
00:37:42
What number? You got to have a number.
00:37:44
If you're going to go top five, you got to put it in a slot.
00:37:46
That's the way the game works. You got to put it in a slot.
00:37:49
I got mine on. I got mine on three.
00:37:53
You know, I'm trying to think of what I actually it's.
00:37:55
We'll go 3. We'll go 33.
00:37:58
I got 5. For proof.
00:37:59
OK, yeah. So this is this is this is a big
00:38:03
one because Dex has it at 3:00, Prue has it at 5:00.
00:38:07
So we've got a unanimous top five choice here.
00:38:09
OK, now you guys just use one of your five slots.
00:38:12
Absolutely. I feel great about it, I hope.
00:38:14
You feel good about that. I hope you feel good about that.
00:38:16
All right, Next up, one of my personal favorites.
00:38:21
Eight men out, eight men out. Great movie, not in the top
00:38:27
five. Yeah, I had it on my list, but
00:38:29
not in the top five. OK, All right.
00:38:32
Woo. It's a good movie.
00:38:33
It's a good movie. It's.
00:38:35
Too old. I feel like I haven't seen it
00:38:38
shoeless. Joe.
00:38:39
Yeah, it is a good. Movie Shoeless Joe Jackson.
00:38:42
Not on my top, I think it's. John Cusack, John.
00:38:45
Cusack for sure. If I remember correctly, it's
00:38:47
it's a great movie. Yep, it's a great movie.
00:38:50
All right, you guys, I'm proud of you for standing firm.
00:38:53
You've only gotten one of your top five so far.
00:38:56
Going to throw another one at you here.
00:38:57
A little bit different. The Sandlot.
00:39:02
The Sandlot. Top five for sure.
00:39:05
Not top five for me. That's just ridiculous, right?
00:39:09
Prue says no decks. Which one?
00:39:13
You've already used 3. I know I'm going, I'm going, I'm
00:39:17
going #5. #5 The Sandlot for decks not on Prue's list.
00:39:22
OK, going a little older, but kind of along the same vein.
00:39:27
Yeah. Oh yeah, yeah.
00:39:29
You know, I might go a little older.
00:39:30
Three spots left. Yeah, you only got 3 spots left.
00:39:34
You only got 3 spots left. There's a good.
00:39:35
There's a bunch of good. Games out there?
00:39:38
Oh. My gosh.
00:39:40
OK, this one's same vein. Little bit older.
00:39:44
The Bad News Bears. The Bad News Bears.
00:39:47
Nah. No love for the bad news?
00:39:51
It's. Fine, but it's not it's not ten,
00:39:53
it's, I would say those. It's at best it's top 10, but
00:39:57
it's OK. Not top five.
00:40:00
No way. Walter Matthau's pretty funny in
00:40:02
it come. On now he's.
00:40:03
Pretty funny in it. Yep, come on now, there's better
00:40:07
choices out there. Yes.
00:40:08
OK, OK. This one, this one's going to be
00:40:11
interesting, so it's going to be interesting, so get ready for
00:40:14
this one, OK? Some people even debate whether
00:40:17
it's a baseball movie. Field of Dreams.
00:40:21
Easy. Top five Easy.
00:40:23
That's the Don't you ever heard? Some people like not a baseball
00:40:27
movie like. A baseball movie.
00:40:29
I have trouble making this not my favorite movie.
00:40:33
It's really close to either one or two and it's basically do I
00:40:37
want. I'm going 2, going 2. 2.
00:40:42
Or that's my #1. It's oh true, I know it's hard
00:40:48
not to be number 12. He's used the one slot, he's
00:40:51
used the bots at one slot, yeah. Brought it out early.
00:40:55
I like it so. Such a fantastic movie.
00:41:00
Yeah. So good.
00:41:02
You laugh, you cry, you get the full range of emotions.
00:41:06
You got the James Earl Jones voice.
00:41:09
Little mystery, kind of like little mystery.
00:41:13
It's a little bit fantasy like Connect.
00:41:16
Connection with the father? Yeah, the whole deal.
00:41:20
I I still cry every time whenever he says.
00:41:23
Want to have a catch? Oh yeah.
00:41:24
Oh. It does dude.
00:41:25
It just gets me. Oh, it's awesome.
00:41:29
All right, so the DEX has used 235 Pruitt.
00:41:33
'S used 1/5. OK, here we go now, man, there's
00:41:37
some still good ones on this list.
00:41:39
Guys, I'm not going to lie. I'm.
00:41:40
Not going to lie to myself, we'll see what's up.
00:41:43
All right, the Next up Major League.
00:41:49
Yep. That's my one slot major
00:41:52
leagues. It's just the most quotable
00:41:53
baseball movie of all time. It's so fun.
00:41:56
I still quote so many of the lines almost all the time.
00:42:01
And when you sat in spring training last weekend, too high,
00:42:04
too high. It's God.
00:42:07
And there's so many quotable lines like, oh, that's enough
00:42:11
fastballs that you throw on the curve.
00:42:14
Hey, there's a lot of Serranos in spring training then, yeah.
00:42:17
Totally. Roger Dorn, What do you want me
00:42:20
to do? Die for it?
00:42:21
I mean, there's just so many great ones all the time.
00:42:24
And like, hats for bats, keep bats warm.
00:42:28
There's just so many. Hey Dex, how's your wife and my
00:42:31
kids? It's just so good.
00:42:35
Rick Vaughn, wild thing. I mean Willie Hayes Mays
00:42:39
stealing 100 bases of pairs of gloves.
00:42:42
Yeah, I didn't think we had any high-priced talent on this team.
00:42:46
We don't. Doran is just high-priced.
00:42:50
So it's it's my favorite just 'cause I watched it probably a
00:42:54
couple months. Ago.
00:42:55
That's my number two Major League.
00:42:57
Is classic OK? 11 and two, the highest ranked.
00:43:02
Well, Field of Dreams. You guys had flip-flopped 2 and
00:43:04
1 you guys got your top two. You got your top 2.
00:43:08
Decks you got 5. Next, you've only got one slot
00:43:13
left. You've only got your four slot.
00:43:15
No, you got. Yeah, you've only got your four
00:43:17
slots. You've got your three and four.
00:43:19
Yeah, yeah, All right. I got four more movies here.
00:43:24
OK, four more movies. I hope.
00:43:26
I hope those two are are on it. They better be.
00:43:32
Bull Durham. Bull Durham, God.
00:43:35
Forgot about that one. Sting, Ding, Ding.
00:43:38
That's my number, That's my #3 Love that movie.
00:43:41
Oh. Man, that's a good one.
00:43:43
Lelouch. Breathe through your eyelids.
00:43:48
Oh man, I want to announce my presence with authority, all
00:43:55
right. He just hit the bull.
00:43:58
Oh. Man, that's a good one.
00:44:11
So it's Pruitt's obviously what what number you got to Prue?
00:44:14
That was 3. That was 3.
00:44:16
Pruitt's got it, 3 decks. Are you saving your four slot?
00:44:21
Oh man, there's been this coming up.
00:44:26
I'm going to save it just because there's one I really
00:44:30
like. There's one I really like coming
00:44:31
up, I hope. All right, so so we it.
00:44:35
Must be 6 though full term is 6. Brew it.
00:44:39
You got it as your 4/3. Are you 3 three I?
00:44:43
Just yeah, I just have my four slot left.
00:44:45
Same with that. OK, so Dex and you both have
00:44:48
your four slot left. There's 3 movies that I have on
00:44:52
my list. Let's see if you guys have it.
00:44:55
They're all good movies. For the love of the game.
00:44:59
For the love of the game. That's my four.
00:45:02
I will. Watch over and over again.
00:45:05
Yes, I love it. That's my, that's my #4 That's
00:45:07
why I couldn't put Bull Durham in there for 11 game.
00:45:09
That's. Almost top five.
00:45:13
It's just good one. The thing about this particular
00:45:15
movie, besides Kevin Costner being awesome and just all
00:45:18
things baseball movie, he's just incredible at.
00:45:21
It's the story and how it's set up the inning by inning and
00:45:25
going through like the whole thing.
00:45:26
It's what he's like 10 and 12 that year going through his last
00:45:29
start and he just clear the mechanism, clear the mechanism,
00:45:32
clear the mechanism. It's awesome.
00:45:35
It's just such a well told story.
00:45:37
This one's it's all baseball still, but it feels like it's a
00:45:40
movie that baseball is in it, but not everything.
00:45:44
I don't know, it's just it's it's awesome.
00:45:46
It's just a really good movie. You haven't seen For Love with
00:45:47
the Game and a lot of people have it like our age group has,
00:45:50
but you go 10 years, 15 years below us and they've never even
00:45:55
seen it. I told, I told my wife we were
00:45:58
doing this on the segment tonight and and I listed out,
00:46:02
you know, my top five or whatever.
00:46:03
And she was like, oh, what about the one with Kevin Costner when
00:46:06
he's like pitching his final game or whatever?
00:46:09
I was like, awesome. So that was that's in her top
00:46:12
five thing for sure. Yeah, absolutely.
00:46:14
It's really good. So we're out of top fives and I,
00:46:18
I know what, there's going to be a couple more coming.
00:46:20
Yeah, it kind of sucks, but. I go ahead do it.
00:46:25
I got my top. Fives.
00:46:27
You've already named five of my top 6, so.
00:46:31
It's a brew. Still missing #4.
00:46:34
Five brew's got, brew's got, you know, brew's you.
00:46:37
You need 4. You need 4 still just. #4 Yep.
00:46:41
All right next to you should be my 7:00 and 8:00 for sure.
00:46:46
A league of their own. Oh God, forgot what that one.
00:46:52
That is, that is my #7 right behind.
00:46:57
League of their own. #7 for Pro League of their own.
00:47:00
Then I had eight men out as 8, so OK, I've got 7 appropriate.
00:47:05
Yes, 88. Oh gosh, it's. 67676 the hard.
00:47:12
That makes it great. It's the hard that makes it
00:47:14
great. It is, man.
00:47:16
There's no. Crying in baseball.
00:47:17
There's no crying in baseball. No crying in baseball.
00:47:21
Oh my. So much good.
00:47:23
It's so much good. Thanks ahead of full Durham for
00:47:26
me. But right there, it's like 6A
00:47:30
and B guys, it's tough. Forgot about that one.
00:47:33
So good, right? Tom Hanks amazing performance in
00:47:36
it. And then the the last one that
00:47:40
I've got here, I've got a couple honorable mentions, but the last
00:47:44
one that I've got here in the top top is Moneyball.
00:47:48
OK. Thank you.
00:47:50
Yeah, that's my #4. Moneyball.
00:47:54
It's really, really good and I watch it.
00:47:56
Another, another, another movie that I can like watch at any
00:48:00
time when it comes on, like at any part.
00:48:04
I love the way it mixes business and thinking.
00:48:08
With. I like that actual redemption
00:48:12
story. Billy.
00:48:15
B. Yeah, it's it's like based on
00:48:17
true story, but. Yeah, based on true story.
00:48:19
And it was that that magical a season where they just got rando
00:48:22
players. It was awesome.
00:48:24
Scott had a bird all day. Yep, Scott had a bird played by
00:48:30
anyone. Oh.
00:48:31
Don't remember that. It's Chris Pratt, isn't it Chris
00:48:34
Pratt? Oh, well done, well done.
00:48:37
Yeah, a young. Chris Pratt.
00:48:39
It was young Chris Pratt before he was in the Marvel Universe.
00:48:44
Totally the a a super, super cool Brad Pitt, a hilarious
00:48:50
Jonah Hill. Jonah Hill, like, it's just,
00:48:54
it's a great cast, great movie. Guy, you're right, the five's
00:48:58
not big enough. No, that's that's what I wanted
00:49:02
it to be. That's what I thought it would.
00:49:03
Be so fun top. 10. And there's another one to fill.
00:49:06
He didn't even mention, but it's one of my absolute favorites and
00:49:10
I hope it's one of you got trouble with the curve that's.
00:49:13
On my honorable mention, I. Love the curve.
00:49:15
On my honorable mention. So good.
00:49:18
That's Clint Eastwood, and it's just.
00:49:19
Clint Eastwood. Awesome, I love it.
00:49:22
It's a great movie. You know what?
00:49:24
I've never seen that. Movie.
00:49:25
It's a great movie. Oh my God.
00:49:26
You should watch a good have a tough time not considering it
00:49:29
for a top five in my opinion 'cause I had that one right
00:49:32
outside. Totally that that one, that one
00:49:36
is a great one. There's a there's a there's a
00:49:41
couple that that also were in here.
00:49:47
I I don't have these in my top, but Angels in the Outfield is
00:49:51
one that was was mentioned by many people, you know, fun, fun
00:49:55
movie. Yeah, there was 61 was mentioned
00:50:01
by a lot of people. The story of it was fine.
00:50:04
It was alright. You know it.
00:50:05
Was very good as well. Jackie, good movie.
00:50:08
The one that I mentioned to you guys though I got to say I'm
00:50:11
giving a big shout out. If you haven't seen it yet.
00:50:13
I think it's on Netflix if you love baseball.
00:50:16
Oh yeah. Oh yeah.
00:50:18
Yeah, saying that I need to write that down.
00:50:20
EFIS is not a big production. It's all set on one field.
00:50:27
If you ever played or you love baseball at all, you will relate
00:50:31
to the characters. You'll relate to this the the
00:50:34
like little comments that are made.
00:50:37
It's not about professional baseball.
00:50:39
It's about old dudes getting out and playing in the Baseball
00:50:41
League and it is like spot on. So I, I highly recommend EFIS if
00:50:46
you haven't seen it. It's super highly critically
00:50:48
reviewed, but it's a it, yeah, it was one of those that got
00:50:51
released. Nobody knew about it.
00:50:52
It wasn't a big release, so check that one out.
00:50:55
For our listeners and maybe one of your Co hosts, can you spell
00:50:58
that for us? EE FUS.
00:51:01
EE PHU. SPHUSEFASE took me so long to
00:51:08
find it the other day. WE was getting.
00:51:10
Me. Yeah, right.
00:51:12
Named after the crazy EFA's pitch.
00:51:16
Yeah. But you, you guys get a chance
00:51:19
to watch that one. But man, I tell you, when I was
00:51:21
looking at these, doing the research on them, you look at
00:51:24
these, I mean the rookie, the Nats.
00:51:26
So Dex's Dex's top five was. Number 5 was.
00:51:30
The Sandlot #4 was. For the love of the game #3 was.
00:51:38
The natural. #2 was Field of Dreams, number one was Major
00:51:42
League Pruitt's top five #5 is the natural #4 moneyball #3 Bull
00:51:51
Durham number two, Major League and #1 Field of Dreams.
00:51:54
So we did have a couple. There were only three that made
00:51:57
both of your lists, Major League Field of Dreams and the natural.
00:52:00
So if you're if you're a shrewdness listener, you haven't
00:52:03
seen those three. Those are must musty viewing.
00:52:06
You just got to think matter of fact, you should stop listening
00:52:08
to the podcast right now, 3 minutes, because that's it.
00:52:12
That that is homework for you. Just have you revealed?
00:52:16
You stop. What have you revealed?
00:52:18
Your top five? No, I didn't do my top five, but
00:52:22
you guys my my top one. My top one is Field of Dreams
00:52:27
because I think it hits all the notes for me.
00:52:30
My number 2's Major League 3 is Bull Durham for me. 4 Well, 5:00
00:52:41
This was really hard for me because I went back and forth
00:52:45
between for the love of the game and The Sandlot I ended up on
00:52:51
For the love of the game. The thing I love about The
00:52:54
Sandlot, we didn't talk much about it, but it was it brought
00:52:57
me back to like our old wiffle ball days and like, that's it,
00:53:01
like the the. Quotes the kid aspect of it.
00:53:05
The kid aspect, there's a ton of like quotable things in that
00:53:08
movie too. 4th of July. Game, which I which I love,
00:53:13
yeah, it's a it's a lot of like growing up.
00:53:18
So that one's probably 6 for me. But man, there's so many so many
00:53:23
good baseball movies and the thing it's nice about all these
00:53:25
movies too it and it's different than a lot of sports movies is
00:53:29
not a lot of they're not just baseball.
00:53:31
A lot of them are like life. That's exactly right.
00:53:35
And it's like telling a story of life through baseball, right?
00:53:40
And that is that's what's so cool about baseball is it it has
00:53:43
that it has that unique ability. I think more than other sports.
00:53:47
I think a lot of it because of the pace, a lot of it because of
00:53:51
the length of the season. And like you kind of have to
00:53:55
fall in love with baseball. It's so many games and you spend
00:53:58
so much time with the sport. It's not like NFL, you're jacked
00:54:02
up for 16 games and it's awesome, 17 games now, but
00:54:05
you're jacked over 17 games. But like, you don't get to know
00:54:08
the players, you don't get to know the announcers, you don't
00:54:11
get to know all that stuff. It is like you do in baseball.
00:54:13
So there's something really romantic about it.
00:54:15
That's it. How do you not be romantic
00:54:17
about? Baseball, it's a slower league
00:54:19
of their own pace. 2 or guys play for 20 years so you got.
00:54:22
Guys in the league that are that could literally totally the
00:54:26
parent of a rookie or something coming in, you know, so you can
00:54:29
see a full career arc 'cause they can.
00:54:31
Come in and start playing in 19 or 20 like Juan Soto and a Rod,
00:54:35
and they go out at like late 30s or 40s or some of these dudes or
00:54:40
somebody. The entire generation of
00:54:42
players. Come and go and they.
00:54:43
Played with all of them. Yeah, it's totally cool.
00:54:47
And there there's the only game that does that.
00:54:48
It's it's super special. I know it's not as.
00:54:51
Popular now I know it's losing popularity because of the speed,
00:54:56
but there's some things if you're if you're.
00:54:58
Younger and you listen to. This.
00:55:00
I get it. It's not bam bam bam bam bam
00:55:02
like everything else that's in your life right now, take a
00:55:06
minute to breathe. Some of the best memories I have
00:55:09
with these guys right here are sitting in right field in Kansas
00:55:13
City, BP leisurely paced game, having conversations, talking
00:55:19
about the batter that's up there, the pitcher who's warming
00:55:22
up, what they got going on. Like it's it's gold.
00:55:27
It's absolute gold. So yeah, try it.
00:55:29
Try to slow down a little bit and enjoy.
00:55:31
A little bit of the game this year.
00:55:33
Absolutely. Well said.
00:55:35
All right, well, I think that is a perfect end to this episode on
00:55:39
baseball and all things baseball.
00:55:40
Love it. Go watch some baseball movies.
00:55:43
Let's get ready for some World Baseball classic.
00:55:46
That's right. Get in the right frame of mind.
00:55:48
Get your quotes ready to go after you watch some of these
00:55:50
movies and root on Team USA. And we'll be back with you next
00:55:55
week. And after next week, we should
00:55:57
have Team USA. All their games should be in the
00:55:59
books so we'll know how they did in the first round of pool play.
00:56:03
I don't expect there to be any tremendous upsets, but we will
00:56:06
highlight you on those and kind of we're going to start going
00:56:09
into more spring training coverage and team previews this
00:56:13
month. We're just kind of letting the
00:56:15
that rosters play out first so we can give you some up to date
00:56:17
stuff and not tell you things in early March.
00:56:19
Then the guy gets hurt. And that was good info.
00:56:22
It's still, yeah, it's still early.
00:56:24
That's right, A lot of spring training.
00:56:25
Left exactly. So we'll be hitting that up in
00:56:28
the future. But all we got to do root on
00:56:31
Team USA this weekend. And as with all things in all
00:56:35
aspects of your life, stay shrewd.
00:56:38
Stay shrewd, everybody.
